One of the key pieces to the Nigerian D’Tigers currently vying for the championship title at the 2015 Afrobasket in Tunisia, Ike Diogu, has sustained a leg injury that will keep him out of the tournament.
Diogu sustained the injury during practice prior to D’Tigers’ first game of the tournament yesterday against Central African Republic. Though the team fared pretty well without him, defeating CAR 88 – 63, Diogu will be sorely missed in crucial games to overcome basketball powerhouses like Angola and Senegal.
Since his debut for the Nigerian national team at the 2012 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Caracas, Venezuela, the 6’9 centre/power forward has proven to be Nigeria’s most dominant player on-the court.
The 31-year old Diogu averaged team-highs 17.8 points and 10 rebounds during three major tournaments for the Nigerian D’Tigers and is regarded as a vital piece to Nigeria’s quest for the Afrobasket title.
Nigeria needs to win the first place at the tournament in order to qualify automatically for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
