Nigeria Men’s National Basketball Team, D’Tigers, are the biggest climbers in the latest rankings released by FIBA.

Nigeria moved nine places from 25th in the world to 16th, overtaking Angola on both world and Africa rankings. Nigeria defeated Angola at the 2015 FIBA Men’s Africa Championship to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Despite failing to qualify for the quarterfinal round at the just concluded Olympic Men’s Basketball Tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Nigeria caught the attention of the world by defeating Croatia and challenging Spain and Lithuania in fierce contests.

Nigeria is now the highest ranked team in Africa and occupies the 16th position globally with 106.2 points. Venezuela, another big leaper, moved from its previous 22nd position to 15th (115.4 points) in the world. Tunisia (69 points) gained two places from 23rd to 21st, while Angola fell eight spots from 15th to 23rd with 66 points.

The United States of America, winners of the Men’s Basketball Tournament at the 2016 Olympics, remain at the top of the global rankings with 1000 points and are followed by Spain (2nd) with 665 points. Serbia (533 points), now 3rd globally, leaped over France (444 points, 4th) and Lithuania (442 points, 5th).
