Anambra Flames makes strong debut in National Division I Men’s Championship

Anambra Flames made its debut at the 2016 National Division I Men’s Championship in Abuja, Friday 18 November, as it defeated the Nigerian Air Force 76-42.

The Flames, established in 2016, features Prewitt Gagara, a veteran point guard and former national team player, on its roster.

The 2016 National Division I Men’s Championship, hosted at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium Abuja serves as a conduit for teams seeking to gain entry into the NBBF/DStv Premier Basketball League. Though there are three vacant slots in the Premier League, the Nigeria Basketball Federation announced a few days prior that only one slot exists for entry into the Premier League via the Division I Men’s Championship. The other two vacancies will be decided by the Federation and League Board.

Hoops and Read, another team that made its debut at the championship, secured a win in its first game, beating the Ondo Raiders 58-51.

Yobe Desert steamrolled Zamfara Shooters in a flawless 20-0 victory. Police Bombers proved the better team in its matchup against Raptors Academy, winning 70-62. Abuja All Stars lost 48-56 to Civil Defense

The Nigerian Army managed 54-53 victory against Dashion Mambas, while Police Baton handed Osun Lions a 57-39 defeat.
