Will Voigt has been announced as the new head coach for the Angola Men’s Basketball Team.
Voigt was tipped as a favourite for the team late October when the Angola Basketball Federation announced it was shopping for a new coach. At the time, the Federation was undecided between Voigt, an American, and Hugo Lopez, a Spanish.
Voigt’s previous assignment for a national team was with the Nigeria Men’s Basketball Team, which he led to its first ever title at the 2015 FIBA Africa Men’s Championship final against Angola in Rades, Tunisia. The African title earned Nigeria an automatic ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil where Nigeria’s performance was applauded for its daring performance in close games against top teams at the tournament.
The Nigeria Basketball Federation hired Voigt in July 2015 but abandoned the brilliant coach in the midst of an administrative battle, effectively dumping him in favour of Alex Nwora who led the team to a Silver medal finish at the 2017 Afrobasket tournament. Though there is no indication that the Nigerian Federation formally terminated Voigt’s contract, the impasse in Nigeria’s basketball house coupled with the replacement by Nwora effectively ends the relationship.
